Jaya Ekadashi is observed on the 11 th day during the Shukla Paksha of Magha month. Jaya Ekadashi or Ekadasi is alos celebrated as Bheeshma Ekadashi or Bhishma Ekadashi in South India, especially in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Usually Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu; however, but Jaya Ekadashi also a day to please Lord Shiva as it falls in the Magha month i.e. the month of worshiping Shiva.
As per legend, once, a Gandharva was singing in the gathering of Lord Indra but was not able to sing properly as he was missing his better half. Due to his out of rhythm singing, Indra got annoyed and cursed him saying that his beloved will change into a monster. Gandharva got scared and asked the lord for forgiveness. But Indra refused his plea and asked him to leave the gathering. With a sad face, he went back to his home and was shocked to see his wife turned into a demon. Gandharva tried many ways to restore back his wife to her original form, but was unsuccessful. One day he met Narad Rishi and told everything to the Rishi and asked for help. Narad Rishi suggested Gandharva to observe Jaya Ekadashi fast. He followed this suggestion and observed Jaya Ekadasi Vrat. As a result, his wife returned back to her normal form.
Lord Sri Krishna in the sacred Skanda Puran said Jaya Ekadashi obliterates all kinds of sinful reactions and demoniac influences that may be affecting the spirit soul. It is known as Jaya Ekadashi, and the fortunate soul who observes a fast on this sacred day is relieved of the great burden of ghostly existence.
Thus there is no better Ekadashi than this, for it truly bestows freedom from birth and death. It is to be honored very carefully and diligently. Therefore one should strictly observe a fast on the sacred day of Lord Hari, especially on this Jaya Ekadashi. A great soul who observes this fast with full faith and devotion has in effect given all kinds of charity, performed all kinds of sacrifice, and bathed in all the Holy places of pilgrimage.
Fasting on Jaya Ekadashi qualifies one to reside in Vaikuntha and enjoy unending happiness for billions of yugas – indeed, forever, as the soul is eternal. One who even hears or reads these wonderful glories of Jaya Ekadashi achieves the blessed merit attained by performing an Agni fire sacrifice - Havan, during which the hymns from the Sama-veda are recited.”
Whoever observes it certainly achieves success in this life and the next. Hence observe the fast according to the sacred rituals of the day.
1.Take holy bath before sunrise
2.Worship the lords of the day i.e. Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu
3.While, performing the evening Puja, chant Shiva Aarti and Narayana Aarti
