Garuda Panchami

Garuda Panchami is a festival celebrated to commemorate the birth of Garuda, an ardent devotee and the bird carrier of Lord Vishnu. The fifth day of the waxing moon in the month of Shravana, is celebrated as Garuda Panchami. Garuda is the son of Vinata and Kashyapa Muni and lives on the planet known as Salmalidvipa where he is constantly offering prayers to Lord Vishnu.

Lord Garuda, the carrier of Lord Vishnu, is the most worshipable lord, for he is as powerful as the Supreme Lord Himself. He is the personified Vedas and is worshiped by selected verses. May he protect us from all dangerous conditions, and may Lord Vishwaksena, the Personality of Godhead, also protect us from all dangers by His holy names.

Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita – vainateyash ca pakshinam, “Among the birds, I am Garuda.” Garuda carries Lord Vishnu on his back always and therefore he is considered as the transcendental prince of all carriers.

In the Vedic literature it is stated that the two wings of the transcendental bird Garuda, are two divisions of the Sama Veda known as brihat and rathantara. When Garuda flaps his wings, one can hear the chanting of the hymns from Sama Veda. Garuda is engaged in eternal service to Lord Vishnu in Vaikuntha. Every temple of Lord Vishnu has a Deity of Sri Garuda sitting in front of the Lord with folded hands.

Garuda is also known by the names: Pakshiraja, Vainateya, Suparna, Garuthman, Periya Tiruvadi, Vinatasuta, Vishnuvahana, Nagantaka and Kashyapeya.

Legend has it that the day remembers Garuda’s love and devotion for his mother Vinita. Thus the day celebrates mother – son relationship. In some regions, married women observe it for a happy married life.

Garuda Panchami Puja is mainly observed by certain Hindu communities in Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra.  On this day Lord Garuda is worshipped along with Nagadevatha (Sesha Devaru). Devotees believe this day to be Garuda Jayanthi the day on which Garuda was born. On this day special celebrations are held at the holy Tirumala temple where Malayappa Swamy (Lord Venkateshwara) is taken out in procession on Garuda Vahana. Garudaadri is one of the seven hills among the Tirumala hills named after Garuda.

Said to be an embodiment of Vedas (Veda Swaroopi) Garuda is prominently eulogized in Puranas for his knowledge, strength and power. With the head and wings of an Eagle, with a strong nose and body of a human, Garuda is regarded as the King of birds (Pakshiraja). We find his reference in several Puranas.

Garuda Purana is one of the Ashtadasa Puranas; exclusively dedicated in the name of Garuda. This shows Garuda’s prominence in Hindu philosophy. Garuda Purana is regarded as a Saattvik Purana.

Garuda was born to Kashyapa Prajapathi and his wife Vinitha. Anoora the Rathasaarathi (charioteer) of Surya the Sun God is his brother. Serpents are his Gnathis (step brothers) born to Kadhru another wife of Sage Kashyapa and sister of Vinitha.

Garuda stands for the majestic Eagle, soaring high in the air, sharp and agile. The mighty bird, Garuda is also known by other names viz. Garuthmantha, Vynatheya, Suparna, Naagaanthaka, Pakshiraja and Vinathasutha.

Garuda is the Divine Vehicle or Vaahana (chief mount) of Lord Vishnu carrying him on his shoulders and thus Lord Vishnu is called as Garudavahana. An ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, Garuda always resides in Sri Vaikunta engaged in eternal service to Lord SriManNarayana.

Panchamukha Aanjaneya Swamy (five headed Hanuman) is depicted as having Garuda as one of the five faces facing west.
